The Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, reiterated the strong commitment of the Government of India towards speeding up the growth process in the Purvodaya States and the Northeast region during the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27.

While presenting the Union Budget 2026-27 in Parliament, the Finance Minister mentioned some initiatives that are region-specific.

Buddhist Circuit Development Scheme Announced

It is pertinent to note that the Finance Minister made an important announcement regarding the launch of a new scheme for the development of Buddhist tourist circuits in the Northeast region. The new scheme will be applicable to Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

As per the Budget plan, the new scheme will focus on the development of religious tourism and the conservation of cultural heritage sites. Apart from this, it will also help in the creation of employment opportunities. The development of infrastructure will be the central idea of the new scheme.

Strengthening the Purvodaya Vision | Union Budget 2026 Northeast

At the same time, Sitharaman reiterated the Purvodaya vision of the Centre, which emphasizes the need for balanced development. She reiterated that investment in the eastern and Northeastern states is still necessary for the development of the country.

Thus, the government will make use of the rich cultural heritage of the region and its location. Moreover, the Buddhist circuit project aims to attract both local and foreign visitors.

Continued Budget Priority for the Northeast | Union Budget 2026 Northeast

Moreover, the Union Budget 2026-27 also remains committed to the Northeastern region. The Centre is working towards ensuring economic integration along with the preservation of the region’s identity through various initiatives.

Therefore, the government is expecting growth, better livelihoods, and development through tourism in the Northeast.
